This talk examines how authoritarian rule in Egypt has evolved under the rule of Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, who is about to embark on his third term as president. It analyzes important shifts that Sisi’s political apparatus and governance strategies have undergone in the past decade and situates them in the economic and geopolitical challenges the country has confronted in recent years.

Hesham Sallam is a Senior Research Scholar at Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (DDRL), where he serves as Associate Director for Research. He is also Associate Director of the Program on Arab Reform and Democracy.
