Speaker:
Prof. Donald K. Emmerson, Director, Southeast Asia Program, Stanford University
Prof. Emmerson’s analysis of Southeast Asia’s current interactions with China will acknowledge the disparities in size and power between the region’s eleven diverse countries and their gigantic neighbor. But that inequality has not rendered those countries powerless before China. The trick is to acknowledge the agency of Southeast Asians without romanticizing it. Prof. Emmerson will also reference the region’s prospects and its countries’ relations with the United States.
