Dr Michael Baker teaches Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) to civilian and military medical providers and Stop the Bleed (StB) to civilians. The goal is to improve the care of injured patients during the first critical minutes after wounding in order to improve survival. He has recently returned from his fourth tour teaching both courses in Ukraine and is scheduled to return for a fifth tour soon. He will review some history and geography of Central Europe/Ukraine, and give his insight into morale and conditions in Ukraine during this conflict. He will also explain where he perceives links of this conflict in Ukraine relate to other problem regions.

About the Speaker
Dr. Michael Baker recently retired from a 40-year career in general, vascular, and trauma surgery. He had a parallel career in the military with a spectrum of experiences that included qualifying in a warfare specialty, combat deployment with the Marines, and strategic planning for both major conflicts and humanitarian emergencies. He served 30 years in the uniform of his country and retired with the rank of rear admiral and has numerous kudos, including 3 Legion of Merit Awards, the Combat Action Ribbon and River and Coastal Patrol Officer-in-Charge warfare pin. He currently teaches history, political science, and military affairs for the Osher LifeLong Learning (OLLI) Programs at UC Berkeley, Dominican University, Cal State University East Bay and Cal State Channel Islands—and is on the Board of Trustees of the newly combined Commonwealth Club World Affairs. He has published more than 90 articles in peer reviewed journals and is on the clinical faculty of several medical schools.
