Since the Taliban took power in 2021, the rights of Afghans have been sharply curtained. Women and girls have been particularly impacted. Women are no longer allowed to study at the secondary school or university level and are not allowed to work.
Two guests will discuss the current situation in Afghanistan, particularly as it relates to the education of girls and women, as well as the work being done to support them. Budd MacKenzie, founder of Trust in Education (TIE), a grass-roots non-profit based in Lafayette that provides educational and economic assistance to families in Afghanistan, will discuss the work being done by TIE. Nasir Nezaami is a law professor at the American University of Afghanistan and currently a fellow at Stanford Law School. Prof. Nezaami will address the situation in Afghanistan and efforts to provide education to female university students.
Doors open at 6:30 PM. This program is open to the public; pre-registration is not required.
